Dear Friends,
With the 2022-2023 cross country and indoor track seasons completed and outdoor track season underway, it’s exciting to see our WAHS student-athletes’ hard work pay off. We are proud to highlight that the girl’s indoor track and field team won the Class 4 state title last month. In addition, both the Western Albemarle boys and girls cross country teams placed 2nd at Region 4D Championships in November and the boys followed that up with a 3rd place finish at the state meet. Our athletes have demonstrated perseverance and discipline as they work to reach their potential both on and off the track.
Our goal as Friends of WAHS Cross Country, Track & Field is to support our student-athletes and the coaches who help them to achieve their personal goals. Over the past twelve months, your donations have funded:
- Over $6,000 in stipends for our uncompensated assistant coaches
- Almost $4,000 to cover athletes’ entry fees and coaches’ travel expenses for postseason and invitational meets, including Nike Cross Regionals for cross country, Adidas Indoor Nationals for sprinters and field athletes, and New Balance Indoor Track Nationals for distance runners and pole vaulters
During our fall fundraiser, we raised $5,000 through generous contributions, which funded half of our annual budget. Looking ahead to the needs of the teams for the remainder of the fiscal year, we are now asking for your help in raising the remaining $5,000. Meeting this goal would allow us to continue providing fully funded stipends for the volunteer coaches, cover entry fees to postseason meets, and fulfill coaches’ requests to purchase new equipment.
Any donation amount is appreciated. We urge you to consider the time and energy the coaches dedicate and reflect on the positive impact the WAHS track and cross country teams have on students. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, your donation is tax-deductible. All the necessary information to complete your donation can be found on our Giving page
In addition to monetary donations, we’re also seeking new volunteers for the Friends of WAHS Track, Field, and Cross Country board. This is a fantastic way to support the track, field, and cross country programs with a low time commitment (approximately 12 hours annually). If you’re interested in helping in this capacity, please contact us at wahsfriendsofxctrack@gmail.com for more details.
Should you ever have any questions about the Friends organization or wish to offer your assistance, please contact us at wahsfriendsofxctrack@gmail.com.
And also follow us on Facebook and Instagram, where results and photos from meets are posted!
Thank you for your contribution and commitment to sustaining the track, field, and cross country programs.

Being on the WAHS cross country and track teams has allowed me to become more confident as a person. Everyone is so supportive, not only in running, but the team care for you whatever you are going through outside of the sport. This team is my second family and I’m forever grateful for them.
