The 2022 Western Albemarle High School cross country season is underway, and it’s exciting to see the student-athletes’ hard work pay off. Many of the runners practiced 6 days a week throughout the summer, meeting their coaches all over Albemarle County as early as 7 a.m. After months of training, the race season began in September with the Ragged Mountain Cup, where the Western Albemarle boys and girls won the team titles. The athletes continued their winning streak the following week as the boys placed first in the Varsity and JV races at the Fork Union Invitational while the girls placed 2nd at the RVA Relays. The girls then closed out September by placing 2nd, and were the top Virginia team, at the Oatlands Invitational where they toed one of the most crowded starting lines in WAHS cross country history (550 runners). But more important than race wins, the runners have demonstrated perseverance and discipline as they work to reach their potential both on and off the cross country course. It’s that hard work coupled with the guidance and encouragement delivered from their coaches that has paved the way for their successes.
Our goal as Friends of WAHS Cross Country, Track & Field is to support our student-athletes and the great coaches who help them to achieve their personal goals. Your generous support helps sustain these programs. In the Winter/Spring 2022 track and field seasons, your donations have funded:
- Modest stipends for uncompensated assistant coaches who invest countless hours coaching kids
- Athletes’ entry fees and coaches’ travel expenses for postseason and invitational meets
- New poles for our pole vaulting squad
Looking ahead to the needs of the teams this year, we are now asking for your help in raising $10,000. This ambitious goal would allow us to:
- Provide fully funded stipends for our volunteer coaching staff.
- Cover entry fees and coaches’ travel expenses to postseason and invitational meets
- Fulfill coaches’ requests to purchase new equipment
Any amount is appreciated. We urge you to consider the time and energy the coaches dedicate and reflect on the positive impact the WAHS track and cross country teams have on students. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, your donation is tax-deductible.
Thank you for your support.
